Description
Jumbo Frames are packet with a bigger payload than the standard 1500 bytes. You may know this as the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit). The advantage of Jumbo Frames is, that your hardware and software on every device that the packets go through have to do less work to process the same amount of data because it’s split into fewer packets. That goes for your sending, receiving and all routing devices.
Enabling Jumbo Frames on FreeNAS is pretty easy. It’s just one option of your network interface.
- To enable, just log into the GUI and go to Network -> Interfaces. Choose your network device and add mtu 9000 to the Options; This will set the frame size to 9000 Bytes. After saving, the option will be shown in the list of network devices
- To the setting to take effect, you have to Reboot FreeNAS.
